Job Description

Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) is hiring a Laboratory Technician for the Intelligent Electrical Power Grids (IEPG) group within the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science. The role is based in Delft, Netherlands, is full time at 38 to 40 hours per week, and carries a 5-year temporary contract.

The technician will help build and operate the next generation power system research infrastructure, supporting the UTOPYS programme’s large-scale real-time simulation platform and laboratory. Duties include installing, operating, maintaining, and expanding the simulation platform; helping researchers configure, validate, and run real-time power system simulations; contributing practical expertise on substation equipment, protection schemes, and grid automation; building hardware-in-the-loop setups that connect simulators to physical equipment; assisting researchers, PhD candidates, students, and industrial partners with experiments; and ensuring safe laboratory operation.

Applicants need an MBO or HBO degree in Electrical Engineering, Energy Technology, Power Systems, or a related field, plus practical experience with electrical power systems, substations, or transmission and distribution networks, and an understanding of power system protection, control, and automation. Experience with simulation platforms, SCADA systems, RTDS, or OPAL-RT, and familiarity with digital substation concepts such as IEC 61850, are desirable. Good written and spoken English is required. The salary is €3,706 to €5,760 gross per month (Scale 10 of the Dutch Universities collective agreement). Applications close on 16 November 2026.
