Jobs in the USA for Foreigners — What You Need to Know

The United States is one of the most requested destinations on AlfaCareers — and one of the most structured. The US has no general job-seeker visa and no open work permit for people applying from abroad: in almost every case, a US employer must be willing to sponsor you. Foreign hiring concentrates in tech hubs such as California, Washington and Texas, in New York finance, and in hospitals and universities nationwide. Salaries are paid in US dollars (USD) and usually advertised as annual figures.

Your real task is therefore not just finding vacancies — it is finding the employers who already sponsor. Large firms, hospital systems and universities sponsor routinely; small companies rarely do. Below: the sectors that genuinely sponsor, the main visa routes, and how to apply so you stay in the shortlist.

Top Sectors Hiring Foreign Workers in the USA

  • Technology. Software, data, cloud and AI employers are the largest H-1B sponsors by volume; sponsorship is normal at larger firms, rare at small ones.
  • Healthcare, especially nursing. Hospitals sponsor doctors, nurses and allied health professionals. Nurses are often recruited through specialist agencies; US licensing (the NCLEX-RN) is required.
  • Engineering. Civil, mechanical, electrical and industrial engineers are sponsored across construction, energy, manufacturing and infrastructure.
  • Universities and research. Universities and nonprofit research organizations are cap-exempt H-1B employers that can sponsor year-round, without the lottery.
  • Finance and professional services. Banks, insurers, accounting firms and consultancies sponsor analysts, accountants, actuaries and consultants in financial centres such as New York.

Work Visa Routes at a Glance

H-1B — the main employer-sponsored route. For specialty occupations that normally require a bachelor’s degree in a specific field. Your employer registers you in the annual USCIS selection process, and only if selected can it file the full petition. The annual cap set by Congress is 65,000, plus a further 20,000 reserved for holders of a US master’s degree or higher, and demand has long exceeded supply; selection now also weights the wage level of the job, so senior, higher-paid roles fare better.

TN status — Canada and Mexico only. Under the USMCA trade agreement, citizens of Canada and Mexico in listed professions — including engineers, nurses, scientists and teachers — can work in the US with a qualifying job offer. There is no lottery and no cap, but the job must genuinely match a listed profession.

L-1 and O-1. The L-1 lets a multinational transfer an employee from its foreign office to its US office, as a manager or executive (L-1A) or specialist (L-1B). The O-1 is for people who can document extraordinary ability or achievement — a high bar, but it avoids the H-1B cap.

Employment-based green cards. Some employers sponsor workers directly for permanent residence through the EB categories (mainly EB-2 and EB-3), usually after labor certification. Waits depend heavily on your country of birth; many work first on H-1B.

How to Apply Through AlfaCareers

  1. Browse the live USA listings on this page and open any job to read the full description, requirements and location — and check its wording on sponsorship.
  2. Follow the apply link to the official employer page or application channel, and apply directly with the employer.
  3. Apply the American way: a resume with no photo or personal details, tailored to the posting and leading with results — and state your sponsorship position honestly and early.
  4. Never pay an agent a fee to apply, or anyone for sponsorship or an offer — sponsorship is the employer’s process and cost. Applying is always free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move to the USA first and look for work when I arrive?

No. Tourist status does not allow work, and there is no US job-seeker visa. The normal order is: job offer first, then the employer’s petition, then you enter to work.

What are my chances in the H-1B selection process?

There is no honest fixed percentage. Registrations have long exceeded the 65,000 regular cap plus 20,000 advanced-degree places, and selection now weights the wage level of the offered job, so senior, higher-paid roles stand a better chance.

I am Canadian or Mexican. Is TN status easier than H-1B?

For a listed profession, yes: no lottery and no cap. Canadians can usually apply at a port of entry with the job offer and credentials; Mexicans apply for a TN visa at a US consulate first. The strict part is the fit with a USMCA profession category.

Do nurses need a job offer before starting US licensing?

You need both tracks together. US nursing requires state licensing, including passing the NCLEX-RN, plus an employer or agency to sponsor your visa. Established nurse agencies normally coordinate the two, paid by the employer, not by you.

Is it free to apply for jobs in the USA on AlfaCareers?

Yes. Candidates always apply free; employers pay to post vacancies. Sponsorship filing fees are the employer’s responsibility — anyone selling you an H-1B or a “guaranteed visa” is running a scam: only USCIS and the Department of State decide applications.
