Job Description
Dalhousie University is recruiting its first Category Lead, Procurement (Posting Number S344-26), reporting to the Manager, Strategic Procurement, in Financial Services. The role is central to Dalhousie’s procurement transformation: the successful candidate will develop and implement category strategies aligned with institutional priorities, conduct spend analysis, supplier reviews and market assessments, build annual category procurement plans from demand forecasting and market analysis, and make business cases for procurement decisions. They will lead complex, high-value sourcing and competitive procurement initiatives from planning through contract, facilitate supplier engagement and evaluations, negotiate commercial terms, and ensure compliance with university policies, public sector procurement standards and trade agreements, while promoting fairness, transparency, sustainability and supplier diversity. The role also involves building trusted relationships with academic, research and administrative stakeholders, advising departments on procurement decisions, driving change toward more centralized procurement, managing supplier relationships and contract performance, and mentoring Buyers and procurement colleagues. The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work, combining in-person work on campus with remote work. Required qualifications: an undergraduate degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Public Administration or a related discipline; a professional procurement designation (SCMP, CIPS, CPPB, CPPO, PSPP or equivalent) or active progress toward one; and 7+ years of progressive procurement experience with increasing strategic responsibility, including sourcing strategies, spend analysis, category management, complex procurement projects, formal RFx processes, supplier negotiations and contract management. Assets include experience in government, higher education, healthcare or the broader public sector, knowledge of public procurement legislation and trade agreements, transformation experience, and exposure to technology-related procurement categories. Job type: Full Time, Regular On-Going, 1.0 FTE, 35 hours per week. Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Salary: $72,430 – $97,028 per annum, as stated on the posting.
