Job Description

CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, is seeking a Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Coordinator for the SKA-Low Telescope in Geraldton, WA. This is a 12-month opportunity (Specified Term, leave cover) — full-time, part-time or job-share. Reference 104216. The SKA-Low Telescope is an international science and engineering project that will form part of the SKA Observatory, a global next-generation radio astronomy facility. Located in remote Western Australia on Wajarri Yamaji Country, SKA-Low will be one of two SKA telescopes and will provide new capabilities for exploring the Universe. In Australia, CSIRO is collaborating with the SKA Observatory to support the construction and operation of the telescope, with teams working across Geraldton, Perth and the telescope site. The HSE team supports this work by coordinating Health, Safety and Environment activities across the project’s operational and site-based environments, helping teams work safely and meet HSE requirements.

About the role
Reporting to the Senior HSE Advisor, you will support the team with training and compliance activities, HSE records and systems, risk assessments and investigations, and the follow-up of actions. You will gain practical experience across both the Engineering Operations Centre in Geraldton and the SKA-Low telescope site. You will bring good organisation, communication and time-management skills, ideally with some experience in administration, training, compliance or Health and Safety. Formal HSE qualifications or extensive experience are not essential. You will receive on-the-job mentoring and support to build your HSE knowledge and practical experience. Based in Geraldton, you will regularly travel to the SKA-Low telescope site, generally every second week, with occasional travel to Perth.

Your high-level duties will include:

  • Supporting the implementation and ongoing review and improvement of SKAO project HSE plans, procedures and the HSE Management System
  • Supporting SKA-Low teams’ training requirements by coordinating training bookings, qualifications and certificates, maintaining training registers, and coordinating integrated team training exercises to test site Emergency Response Plans
  • Supporting teams to complete risk assessments and making recommendations to reduce risk exposure, and assisting with the timely close-out of investigations and corrective actions
  • Supporting the SKA-Low HSE Committee by maintaining the action register and working with action owners to close out agreed tasks
  • Supporting HSE compliance, document and records management across online systems, including SharePoint, Confluence and Rapid Global, and accurately maintaining records of inspections, assurance, training and other HSE activities

Role particulars
Salary: AU$76K – AU$96K per annum (pro-rata for part-time) plus 15.4% superannuation, plus opportunity for overtime when on site. Tenure and work schedule: Specified Term of 12 months (leave cover) — full-time, part-time or job-share.

As the successful candidate, you will bring:
Essential: a background in Health and Safety administration, training, compliance, or other project administration; a valid C Class Driver’s Licence; skills in Microsoft Office and Microsoft 365 platforms (e.g. SharePoint, Teams, Outlook); experience in records management and compliance processes. Desirable: certification in Occupational Health and Safety, or practical site-based experience in a Health and Safety role; willingness to undertake higher training in Occupational Health and Safety as part of ongoing professional development; experience working in remote or regional locations; experience collaborating with construction teams or working in a construction environment.

Eligibility: applications are open to Australian Citizens, New Zealand Citizens, and Australian Permanent Residents. Appointment is subject to provision of a national police check and may be subject to other security/medical/character requirements. The successful candidate will be required to undergo a pre-employment medical examination, provide evidence of a C Class driver’s licence, and provide a Construction Card (WHITE CARD) (or be willing to obtain it upon appointment).

How to apply
Apply online with a CV and a detailed cover letter responding to each of the selection criteria in detail. Applications close 15 November 2026, 11:00pm AEDT.
