Mohammed Shami Retires from Test Cricket After 13-Year Career with 229 Wickets for India

India fast bowler Mohammed Shami has announced his retirement from Test cricket, ending a 13-year career in the longest format.

The 36-year-old announced the decision on Friday in an emotional post on Instagram, exactly 13 years after making his Test debut against the West Indies at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on 6 November 2013.

Shami finished with 229 wickets from 64 Tests at an average of 27.71, including six five-wicket hauls. His last Test was the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval. On his debut, he took a match haul of 9 for 118 as India won by an innings and 51 runs.

He was a key member of India’s pace attack at home and overseas, known for his seam movement and his reverse swing with the older ball, and was part of the side that won a Test series in Australia for the first time in 2018-19.

“I am bidding farewell to the white jersey, but never to the memories associated with it,” Shami wrote, signing off with: “Shukriya, Test Cricket.”

Shami said he will continue playing white-ball cricket, including in the Indian Premier League and domestic cricket, and has been named in Bengal’s squad for the 2026-27 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, starting on 14 November.
