Multiple loud booms were heard in Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, on Sunday, shortly after the country’s Civil Defense issued an early-warning alert about a potential threat, Reuters reported, citing a witness in the city. The Civil Defense later said the danger had passed.
The incident came as hostilities continued between the kingdom and Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group.
Separately on Sunday, Saudi civil defence lifted alerts in several areas of the kingdom’s oil-rich Eastern Province, including Dhahran, home to the headquarters of oil major Saudi Aramco, shortly after warning of potential danger. The all-clear also applied to Dammam, Abqaiq and Al-Ahsa governorate.
Shortly after the all-clear, the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen said it had intercepted a ballistic missile launched by the Houthi group towards the Eastern region.
The Houthis have been firing ballistic missiles and drones at Saudi airports, ports and oil installations, Reuters reported, in a war that began with the US and Israel attacking Iran in February.
