Hong Kong Activist Joshua Wong Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison Under National Security Law

Hong Kong democracy activist Joshua Wong, 30, was sentenced on Thursday, 5 November 2026, to 10 years in prison on a charge of collusion with foreign entities under Hong Kong’s national security law.

He pleaded guilty to the charge in September. Prosecutors said Wong conspired with self-exiled activist Nathan Law and others in 2020 to ask foreign countries, institutions and individuals to impose sanctions or blockades, or take other hostile action, against the governments of Hong Kong and China.

Wong became the international face of Hong Kong’s democracy movement, first rising to prominence as a teenage leader of the 2014 Umbrella Movement. He has been in jail since 2020 and is already serving a sentence for a separate national security conviction linked to an unofficial primary election in 2020.
