US Midterm Elections Under Way as Voters Decide Control of Congress

Voters across the United States began casting ballots on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, in midterm elections that will decide which party controls Congress for the remainder of President Donald Trump’s second term.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats are being contested, along with governorships in 36 states. More than 230 million people are eligible to vote.

Polling hours vary by state. The first polls opened in Vermont at 5 a.m. local time (10:00 GMT), with voting starting at 6 a.m. in New Jersey, Virginia, Connecticut and Kentucky, and between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. in Georgia, Florida, Pennsylvania and New York.

The earliest polls close at 6 p.m. local time in Indiana and Kentucky (23:00 GMT). First results are expected on Tuesday evening, but some closely fought races may not be decided until Wednesday or later.

The elections are widely seen as a referendum on President Trump’s first two years back in office, although he is not himself on the ballot. Republicans currently hold both chambers of Congress.
