Six Killed, 15 Injured in Kraków Shooting as Gunman Opens Fire in Main Market Square

Kraków, Poland — Six people were killed and 15 people were injured on Saturday after a gunman drove into Kraków’s Main Market Square and opened fire at random from his car, Polish police said.

The shooting began at around 3 p.m. local time (1400 GMT) in the historic square in Kraków’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular tourist destination. Police said the gunman, a Polish citizen, fired randomly at passers-by from a moving vehicle.

Four women and two men were killed, police said. Among the 15 injured were two police officers, one of them in a very critical condition after being shot three times and undergoing surgery.

Police shot the gunman, who was wearing military-style clothing and carrying military-type weapons, and took him into custody. Police said many weapons and ammunition were found in his vehicle, and that the only known perpetrator of the incident was in police custody. No motive has been given, and the identities of the victims have not been released.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk said police were investigating the attack and travelled to Kraków. President Karol Nawrocki said his thoughts were with the victims and their families. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński praised the police response, saying officers had acted immediately and risked their own lives.
