Europe Flights Diverted After Hoax Bomb Threats as Fighter Jets Escort Passenger Planes

Airlines across Europe faced a second wave of bomb threats on Thursday, 5 November 2026, with around 25 flights affected. Some aircraft were diverted to other airports, while others continued to their destinations escorted by fighter jets. Security searches found no explosives on any of the aircraft examined.

An Aer Lingus flight from Dublin to Rome, EI402, was diverted to Evreux air base in Normandy, France, after a bomb threat. The aircraft landed safely after being escorted by a French warplane, according to the French prime minister’s office.

A Finnair flight from Helsinki to Rome was escorted by Italian Air Force fighter jets and landed safely at Rome Fiumicino Airport.

In Bulgaria, three Ryanair flights bound for Sofia were targeted. The flight from London Stansted was diverted to Plovdiv, while the other two landed in Sofia, with Bulgarian fighter jets escorting all three aircraft.

Spanish authorities received three emailed bomb threats in under 20 minutes. Threats were also received at Heathrow and Birmingham airports in the United Kingdom, and four planes heading to Prague were threatened, with Czech police assessing the credibility of those threats as low.

UK Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander described the threats as “malicious hoax threats”. Earlier in the week, at least seven flights and a cruise ship received bomb threats, and no devices were found.

No country has attributed blame for the threats.
