Americans voted in the midterm elections on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, and the Democrats have taken control of the United States Congress, delivering a major setback to President Donald Trump and the Republican Party in the final two years of his term.
The Democratic gains were not limited to Washington. At state level, the party flipped Republican-held governors’ offices in at least five states, and for the first time in years it will control a majority of the country’s governorships.
In Texas, Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Governor Greg Abbott, who was seeking a fourth term, to become the first Latina governor in the state’s history. In Georgia, Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first Black woman ever elected governor in the United States. In Ohio, Democrat Amy Acton defeated Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, and Democrats also won the governor’s races in Iowa and Nevada. In New Mexico, Democrat Deb Haaland became the first Native American woman elected governor.
Democratic candidates also seized control of both chambers of the state legislature in Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, giving the party full control of the legislature and the governor’s office in those states, while breaking Republican control in Georgia, Iowa, Ohio and Texas. In Georgia, Indiana and Ohio, Democrats also ousted incumbent Republican secretaries of state, the officials who oversee election administration and the certification of results.
The results could shape future US elections, because governors and state legislatures influence how congressional districts are drawn, how elections are run and how results are certified. New Democratic governors and legislators are expected to focus on voters’ concerns about the cost of living, including raising the minimum wage and expanding health coverage.
“The voters have delivered a mandate for change, and it is change they will get,” Hinojosa said in her victory speech on Tuesday night.
