Favourite Point of Law, ridden by Ethan Brown, has won the 2026 Melbourne Cup at Flemington on Tuesday 3 November 2026, in a race worth AU$10 million.
Point of Law surged past early frontrunner Royal Supremacy in the straight to take the prize. Zahrann finished second, stablemate Juja Kibo third, and Sons and Lovers fourth.
The result made history for trainer Ciaron Maher, who became the first trainer in the race’s 166-year history to train the first three place-getters. Maher saddled a record seven runners in the race and won Australia’s greatest race for the second time, while Brown claimed his first Melbourne Cup.
Brown’s win also completed a comeback after a near-fatal fall at the same track in 2023.
Point of Law is a homebred of King Charles and Queen Camilla, sold for a figure reportedly north of AU$3 million.
Before the race, Chris Waller’s runner Asterix was scratched after the medication Penetrene was found on its forelegs on race morning. Waller was fined AU$50,000 by Racing Victoria stewards.
