A federal judge on Sunday threw out a lawsuit by the Trump administration that sought to block Alaska from certifying a loss by Republican Senator Dan Sullivan in the 3 November election if votes for a rival candidate sharing his name could have changed the outcome, Reuters reported.
US District Judge Sharon Gleason issued the ruling in Anchorage. Reuters describes it as the latest setback for President Donald Trump’s effort to expand the federal government’s role in elections, which the US Constitution leaves to the states to administer.
The Associated Press, in its Sunday news summary, likewise reported that the judge had dismissed the Justice Department lawsuit seeking to block certification of Alaska’s Senate race if Sullivan loses.
