Four EU Peacekeepers Killed as Helicopter Crashes in Bosnia During Training Flight

A helicopter operated by the European Union peacekeeping force in Bosnia and Herzegovina crashed on Thursday in the country’s north, killing four personnel on board and injuring 11 others, according to the force.

The Italian CH-47 Chinook crashed during routine training in an area around the town of Brcko, the Associated Press reported, citing a statement from the force. The 11 injured personnel are in stable condition and receiving medical treatment. The force said no civilian infrastructure, property or vehicles were damaged, and there were no injuries to civilians.

The EU force, known as EUFOR, said a thorough and complete investigation was under way and that more information would follow once verified.

EUFOR’s 1,200-soldier mission took over from NATO in 2004 to help maintain security and oversee the military provisions of the peace agreement that ended the 1992-95 war. It operates under a United Nations Security Council mandate.

On Friday, the Security Council unanimously adopted resolution 2834 (2026), renewing the authorisation of the EU-led multinational stabilisation force, EUFOR-Althea, for a further 12 months to help implement the military aspects of the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement.
